Mitsubishi is a major player in the SUV industry, with a range of popular and well-respected commercial vehicles and luxury family cars. The Japanese marque has recently announced plans to expand its model offering significantly, with five new SUVs in the next five years.
Mitsubishi’s expansion will increase its offering of electric and plug-in hybrid technology, with two full electric vehicles among the five new models. This drive of innovation will accompany a shift towards the top end of the market, with premium SUVs designed for discerning drivers. The concepts released so far showcase a new design direction for the marque, with sharp, angular styling and sporty details. Each of the five new SUV models will embrace this aesthetic while remaining true to the rugged and performance-focused heritage of the Mitsubishi marque.
The new generation of the popular Shogun Sport is likely to arrive in the UK by the end of 2016. This model is already on sale in other parts of the world where it is being well received by customers.
The Shogun Sport is a seven-seat SUV with a refined and comfortable interior. It is underpinned by the same systems as the L200 pick-up meaning it is also a highly resilient vehicle that tackles off-road terrain with ease.
The next of the five models will arrive in Birchwood Mitsubishi showrooms in 2017. It will be a large crossover SUV to replace the ASX, and offer petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid powertrain options. This boldly styled model is based on the XR-PHEV II concept that Mitsubishi launched last year, which delivered energetic four-wheel drive performance and CO2 emissions of less than 40g/km.
In 2018 Mitsubishi plans to launch its first all-electric SUV, with an impressive expected range of around 250 miles. This model will be based on the eX Concept and will be slightly smaller than the 2017 crossover. Front and four-wheel drive options are likely to be offered, and conventionally powered diesel and petrol models of the small SUV will go on sale around the same time.
The all-new Outlander is due in 2020, updating the current model which launched in 2015. The current Outlander is a stylish and spacious family car with a focus on high-quality materials and interior refinement. It is available with a choice of diesel and plug-in petrol and electric hybrid powertrain options and the 2020 model is likely to build on this technology.
Completing the new model line-up in 2021 will be the Mitsubishi Shogun. The current Shogun model is a large and formidable off-road 4x4 vehicle available with a choice of strong diesel units beneath the bonnet. Mitsubishi has not yet released detailed information about its plans for the new Mitsubishi Shogun. However, the updated model of the Mitsubishi’s flagship vehicle is likely to cement the marque’s reputation as the go-to manufacturer of invincible four-wheel drive SUV vehicles.
