What is the Expensive Car Supplement?

The Expensive Car Supplement, often referred to as the 'luxury car tax,' is an additional VED charge applied to vehicles with a list price exceeding £40,000. This supplement is payable annually from the second to the sixth year of the vehicle's life, resulting in five consecutive payments.

What are the Key Changes Effective from April 1, 2025?

Inclusion of EVs and Hybrids: Previously, zero-emission vehicles, including EVs, were exempt from VED. However, starting April 1, 2025, all new zero-emission cars registered on or after this date will be subject to VED.

  1. First-Year Rate: New zero-emission vehicles registered from April 1, 2025, will incur a first-year VED rate of £10.
  2. Standard Rate: From the second year onwards, these vehicles will be subject to the standard VED rate, which will be £195 annually.
  3. Expensive Car Supplement: Vehicles with a list price over £40,000 will incur an additional annual charge of £425 from years two to six, on top of the standard VED rate. This means affected vehicles will pay a total of £620 per year during this period, amounting to an additional £3,100 over five years.

What is the Impact on New and Existing Vehicles?

  • New Vehicles: EVs and hybrids registered on or after April 1, 2025, with a list price exceeding £40,000, will be subject to both the standard VED and the Expensive Car Supplement.
  • Existing Vehicles: EVs registered before April 1, 2025, will not be subject to the Expensive Car Supplement. However, they will be required to pay the standard VED rate of £195 annually from April 1, 2025.

If you're planning to purchase a new EV or hybrid vehicle, it's important to consider these upcoming tax changes:

Vehicle Selection: To avoid the Expensive Car Supplement, you might consider choosing models with a list price under £40,000 or opting for vehicles registered before April 1, 2025.
