The government is considering the ban of all petrol and diesel vehicles by 2040 as we move into a more sustainable, electric driven world. Whilst this is many years away, many car manufacturers are doing their part in order to help cut air pollution in the short term. Whilst mainly targeting older diesel vehicles, which are the most polluting, many manufacturers are banding all older vehicles together, no matter the fuel type, in order to get drivers into a newer, cleaner vehicle. That's where the scrappage schemes come in. These act as incentives or "rewards" to customers who opt to change their vehicle for one less polluting and bagging a great discount in the meantime.
Scrappage schemes favour older cars, and in terms and value for money, the older the better. No matter the age of the vehicle, as long as it's registered before the specified date, a manufacturer will give you a set amount against a new car. In turn, you can use this as a finance deposit, which can bring your monthly payments down to very affordable levels, making a new car more accessible than you might think.
It is worth noting though that the amount on offer can vary by model and Scrappage offers are not often available across the a full manufacturers range. Different manufacturers also have different trade-in criteria, so where you might be eligible for one offer, you may not for another.
With the exception of Ford cars, Mitsubishi and ŠKODA, all Scrappage offers available through Birchwood Group have been extended until September 2018. Each scheme varies in terms of the contract and delivery date of the vehicle, some of which are available until later in the year. Read the terms and conditions of each of the manufacturer offers as these do vary.
