Ford Mustang GTD - A New Era For Ford

Ford Mustang GTD Shatters Expectations with Record Lap at Nürburgring

The legendary Nürburgring Nordschleife, often referred to as the "Green Hell," has long been the proving ground for the world's most advanced performance cars. Recently, Ford’s flagship track-oriented vehicle, the Mustang GTD, etched its name in history with a record-setting lap that has sent shockwaves through the automotive world.

The Lap That Changed Everything

The Ford Mustang GTD completed the lap in an astonishing time of 6 minutes and 58 seconds, marking it as one of the fastest production vehicles ever to tackle the 12.9-mile circuit. This monumental achievement not only demonstrates Ford’s engineering prowess but also positions the GTD as a serious contender among supercars from the likes of Porsche, Lamborghini, and Ferrari.

The lap was meticulously documented, with telemetry and on-board footage capturing the GTD’s blistering pace. The car’s ability to handle the track’s challenging mix of high-speed straights, blind corners, and elevation changes showcases the extensive development efforts behind its creation.

What Makes the Mustang GTD Special?

The Mustang GTD is no ordinary muscle car. Built as a homologation special inspired by the Mustang GT3 race car, it blurs the lines between track and street capabilities. Standout features include:

  • Aerodynamics: Active aerodynamics adjust the rear wing, front splitter, and underbody elements for optimal downforce and reduced drag.
  • Powertrain: A supercharged 5.2-liter V8 engine delivers over 800 horsepower through a rear-mounted transaxle for better weight distribution.
  • Suspension: Advanced pushrod suspension ensures precision handling, while adaptive dampers adjust in real-time.
  • Lightweight Materials: Carbon fibre in the hood, roof, and aerodynamic components keeps weight down and improves rigidity.

The Team Behind the Triumph

Ford Performance collaborated with Multimatic—the engineering firm behind the Ford GT supercar—to develop the GTD. Rigorous testing on tracks worldwide culminated in the Nürburgring lap, a key milestone. Mark Rushbrook, Global Director of Ford Performance, remarked, “The Mustang GTD was designed with one purpose: to dominate on the track. This record is a testament to what’s possible when innovation, passion, and determination come together.”

Witnessing the Mustang GTD’s Debut

We had the privilege of attending the 2024 Goodwood Festival of Speed, where the Mustang GTD made its dynamic debut. Watching it charge up the hill climb was an unforgettable experience—how good did it look and sound?! From the massive aero additions at the front to the swooping rear wing and those monstrous exhausts, every detail screamed performance. The Mustang GTD is a masterpiece, and we are incredibly excited to see what the future holds for this phenomenal machine.
