Developed by Ford, Curve Control provides the driver with greater command of a vehicle whenever it is turned into a bend too quickly. This technology is the marque’s response to numerous studies that found that travelling around curves too rapidly was causing approximately 50,000 collisions each year in the United States. Many of these incidents were discovered to have taken place on freeway ramps (as motorists were exiting a dual-carriageway), before entering curves at higher speeds than is advisable.
The technology is an extension of Ford’s AdvanceTrac system, which enhances a vehicle’s stability. Curve Control detects any examples of understeering and makes the necessary adjustments to compensate for potential loss of control. Among other things, it constantly –and virtually instantaneously – measures wheel speed, acceleration and steering wheel angle.
Whenever necessary, Curve Control quickly reduces torque and applies brake pressure in order to keep the vehicle under control, ensuring that the intended path continues to be followed.
The system is effective on a number of surfaces, whether wet or dry, snowy or gravelly. It is particularly useful when driving on a raised curve, when control of a vehicle is a little trickier to achieve than usual, such as on a motorway turn-off ramp.
Unless you wish to switch it off, Curve Control will remain active. Turning it off is easy, however. All you need to do is push the Traction Control button on the vehicle’s dashboard for approximately five seconds and you will get visual confirmation that the system has been deactivated.
To help ensure the driver’s continued safety, the system will, however, automatically kick in when the vehicle achieves speeds of 30mph or over. It will disengage once more when vehicle speed drops below 30mph.
Because they are more susceptible to roll-over, SUVs and commercial vehicles such as vans will benefit from the technology at first.
